In 1878 the flickering lamp light of the Commercial Hotel lit a special fire in an adventurous group of sporting gentlemen from the Yass district and a rugby union club was formed. That glow has continued for generations since and is personified today in the Yass Rams Rugby Union Club.
Though not in consecutive competition due to inconvenient events such as two World Wars and a Great Depression, the Yass Rams have been a competitive force in the New South Wales and ACT Rugby Unions since adopting the Southern Rugby Rules of 1878 on that fateful May evening.
The Rams were mustered to the Monaro Grand Finals regularly in the early nineties and succeeded in snaring the Cup in 1995, 1997, and 1998. In 2005 an impressive undefeated Rams first grade side were crowned ACTRU first division premiers which incorporated the inaugural ACTRU First Division Club Championship. This was followed by another first grade premiership in 2013 and a successful tilt at the second grade title in 2015. Former glories included the 1899, 1900 & 1901 Massey Cup, and premierships in the 1966 and 1972 Canberra competitions.
The Club currently contests the ACTRU South Coast Monaro Competition against teams from Boorowa, Taralga, Jindabyne, Crookwell, Braidwood, Bungendore, Batemans Bay, and Gungahlin.
For the Yass Rams, there is more to rugby than just football. It is a Club deeply ingrained in the history of the small town in which it is based and the Rams provide an important social network within the community. The Rams are an open and inclusive Club that welcomes players of all levels of skill and experience.
